an open letter to everyone

Hello

Our nation commemorates yet another year of independence. Wooo. Yay. To some, this is a joyous occasion of nationalistic pride and fervour. For the rest, it seems like we are just going through the motions and acting out the same old story on the same old stage. This rift among the people warrants closer inspection. It would hence be apt that we conduct a retrospective look back at the events that have shaped us, followed with a frank assessment of our standing in life thus far and where we need to go next.

The pomp and pageantry may seem orchestrated to levels of military precision (in fact it is); which brings an interesting point to mind. Ever considered that our lives thus far have been planned and executed according to a plan? A standard path dictated not by rule or force but by the social pressures of society which demand that we chase excellence and produce tangible results. Nothing much wrong with that. But the attendant stress and other assorted problems don’t help much, often stifling creativity and nipping young ones in the butt before they get a chance to shine.

So let’s fix this.

Firstly, take stock of our present situation. Having spent the better part of two decades battling with/within/against the system, I assume that everyone has amassed a sizeable collection of battle scars – most of them being mental rather than physical – throughout our trials and tribulations. The harshness of life outside may have come as a shock to most us. Experiences of shady politicking, exploitation and traitorous back-stabbing have undoubtedly entered our consciousness and memories in the past few years upon our release from the 12 year long shackles of government schooling. But we cannot let such horror stories affect us negatively. What doesn’t kill us will make us stronger so take all the above in your stride and keep going.

Next, we have to get our own house in order before venturing to greater things. Our ‘house’ being more than just the calm sanctity of a domestic abode, but a wider yet still intimate circle of friends and family. Keep them close and tight-knit. Distractions may present themselves, in a myriad of forms; do your best to keep them at bay. The saying goes that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and a chain with rapidly weakening chains is one nearing the end of its useable lifespan. So close ranks and stand united in the face of attractive and often more alluring opportunities, lest you live to regret making the wrong decision in future. What has taken years to build can crumble in months or days if cracks in the foundations are not addressed properly and instead papered over, with a thin coat of paint masking the underlying issues.

And now, weeks, perhaps months later when you have accomplished the above (I didn’t say it would be done quickly) you will be ready for the next step. You have to choose carefully, but you will not have to choose alone. The collective wisdom of your closest associates and confidantes will be at your fingertips. You will be shown how to do a good, no, a GREAT one on life. Stay tuned.
